Waikiki  – Bed bugs have made thier way to the vacation hot spot of Waikiki, ruining a vacation for one New Jersey family. The family states that they found bed bugs as well as bed bug fecal stains on thier at the Waikiki Sunset hotel mattresses.

Bed bugs seem to be making a true comeback in Hawaii and may hitch rides to and from this tropical location through increased travel thoughout the US and the world. bed bugs found in Vancouver hospital with MRSA

Bed bugs are spreading across the United States at a rapid pace; infesting homes, office buildings, and even hospitals! Researchers  in a Vancouver hospital found bed bugs carrying diseases such as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci) –  according to reports in the June edition of the CDC journal of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

While past research indicates that bed bugs are not known to spread infectious diseases to humans, these findings may shed doubt on that belief. While no further disease transmission through bedbugs has yet been discovered, the phenotype of MRSA found in the bedbugs did match that found in many Eastside patients. Researchers conclude that it is possible that these critters are responsible for transmitting these diseases in overcrowded and impoverished cities. Just one more reason not to let the bed bugs bite!

bed bug image, bed bugs picturesA national bed bug summit event was held and said to finish up February 9th in Washington. This event, led by the EPA, discussed the battle against the infamous bed bugs.

Some of what will be addressed during the two-day national summit is expected to concentrate on developing pesticides that serve as more effective in killing bed bugs. But many companies believe to have the answer with some old technology; man’s best friend. Bed Bugs Bloom in Bloomingdales

bloomies, bed bugs, bedbugs, bloomingdales, nyc bed bugsThe severity of bed bug infestations have sprouted to a maximum. It seems that, one by one, clothing stores have to shut down due to a bed bug problem. Bloomingdales, located on Manhattans east 59th street, was New York’s latest top leading store to close temporarily because of a bed bug. Yes, a single bed bug. The store took this measure because where one bed bug is found, many others can arise.  Bed bugs commute by traveling on people’s clothes and bags and that once they are inside of a store or a home, they feed and multiply.

Other retail stores that were affected by bed bugs were Hollister, Niketown, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Victoria’s Secret. Evidently, this bed bug resurgence is not easily controlled. It has become such a serious issue that the City Council has created an Advisory Board to discuss how this problem should be dealt with. Ironically, even members of the health department have been hit with the bed bug epidemic.

Although no universal remedy has been found for this widespread plague, there are precautions that can be taken to prevent bed bugs from affecting your bedyour children at collegeyour children and your suitcases and clothing when traveling.

Bed Bugs around the US

Bed bugs continue to be a growing problem. Possible reasons for the resurgence of bed bugs range from increased international travel, to the fact that methods for eliminating bed bugs have been changed. It is said that the best way to prevent bed bugs is to not let them in the house in the first place. This becomes a difficult solution to achieve because bed bugs are infesting every area we inhabit: our homes, movie theaters, stores, dressing rooms, and office buildings.

A survey conducted by the National Pest Management Association and the University of Kentucky says that 95% of 1,000 U.S and international pest management companies reported encountering bed bug infestations. This amount increased from what used to be 25% merely a decade ago.   Once bed bugs enter your home, the cost to eliminate them can be thousands of dollars. Missy Henriksen, spokeswoman for the National Pest Management Association, emphasizes that even though most people do not have bed bugs, it is more tormenting and exigent to get rid of them once they are present, rather than taking preliminary approaches in preparation.

Although many places can contain bed bugs, one of the most invasive and disturbing of all is your own bed. The best way to discover bed bugs is to inspect your sheets, mattress seams, and by use a flashlight to look under your headboard.
