“Bedbugs” book hits the shelves on September 6th

Bedbug book, Ben H. Winters

We’ve all read books that make our skin crawl, remember Goosebumps – the  blood-curling books of the 90s? But author Ben H. Winters takes this idea to a whole ‘nother, more literal, level in his book “Bedbugs”. In his modern take of Ira Levin’s “Rosemary’s Baby”, his main character Susan Wendt finds herself going crazy over bedbugs that seem to be a figment of her own imagination.

Susan and her husband Alex, along with their daughter move into a new, seemingly too-good-to-be-true, apartment. The apartment really does turn out to be too-good-to-be-true when Susan discovers a bed bug bite on one of her portraits. Then the bedbug bites start showing up all around the apartment, including on Susan herself. But for some reason neither Alex nor her daughter Emily ever wake up with any bites and both don’t seem to think the house is infested. Susan thinks she’s having hallucinations after an exterminator examines the house and announces it is bedbug free. Yet, Susan continues to be tormented by these critters. Winters spares no detail in describing the bugs crawling all over Susan’s body leaving a trail of bed bug bites as she helplessly lies in bed. Reading the book you certainly do not feel any better than Winters’ character does – in fact you almost can’t help running to your bed, yanking off the covers and checking your sheets for signs of these horrific bugs.

While the book is intense and thrilling it is definitely made for a strong-stomached audience, so if that is not you be careful before picking up Winters’ “Bedbugs” off the bookstore shelves.

Bed bug research searches for new ways to kill bed bugs

Be d bug elimination has become increasingly difficult and expensive. Killing bed bugs takes up time and often involves paying hundreds of dollars to fumigators or bed bug exterminators.

Entomologist Coby Schal of North Carolina State University (NCSU) was recently awarded a $75,000 grant to research new ways to eliminate bed bugs. I recently read a post in response to our youtube bedbug video that read:

I can not believe that we can send men to the moon, probes into space, creating drones to the war, but when small bugs have come is the age of caves, pathetic! !

But since the elimination of DDT, these small bugs seem to be a true cause for concern for many people. We already know that bed bugs are attracted to human heat and CO2. This recent NCSU bed bug research is currently working to understand what exactly bed bugs are attracted to within human blood, so that one day we can create an effective bed bug trap to be able to eliminate these critters in a cost effective way. Find Pest Control Now!

  1. Know the law: While we do not offer legal counsel, there are many laws about bed bugs in apartment buildings. A full list of bedbug laws in NYC can be found by clicking here.
  2. Find a Pest Control Company: It is the landlords responsibility to get the apartment checked for bedbugs. Many times other bugs, such as carpet beetles or dust mites can be confused for bed bugs. You can find exterminators using the Find Pest Control tab on Bedbug.com’s website or simply click the image on the right. NOTE: All exterminators listed on Bedbug.com have been verified, and many even have coupons for free bed bug inspections or reduced price treatments!
  3. Check for Bedbugs: Use your chosen exterminator to get the apartment in question checked for bed bugs. If that apartment does not have bed bugs, please skip to step 6 below.
  4. Eliminate Bed bugs: If bed bugs are located, bed bug treatments to eliminate them must be initiated. Be prepared that killing bed bugs is often expensive, typically between 400 and 1,000 dollars.
  5. New NY law! Landlords are responsible for checking adjacent apartments for bedbugs. While this is not extremely common, this is a new law in New York State because bed bugs have been found to crawl from one apartment to the next, especially in cases of heavy infestations.
  6. Encase Mattresses and Laundry: Consider bed bug mattress and clothing encasements to prevent any bed bug scares in the future. This may also add a sense of security for both yourself and your frazzled tenant, and help to patch up any residual tensions from this episode. NOTE: When purchasing bed bug encasements, make sure they have been tested and certified bed bug proof and look at the warranty – entomologist testing and lifetime warranties typically indicate confidence in the preventative abilities of the encasement product.
  7. Bonus Step: Bedbug.com coupon code! We know how hard bed bug detection and killing bed bugs can be; both emotionally and financially. Well, we’re here to help ease this in whatever ways we can. DIY: Home made bed bug prevention

Mattress bed bugs infested

Once you’ve got bed bugs, we don’t recommend taking things into your own hands. That’s why exterminators were invented.

But what can you do to prevent bed bugs at home before that happens?

Here are some quick and easy steps typically recommended by bed bug professionals:

  1. Make sure your bed is not touching the wall
  2.  Remove excess clutter from your apartment or wall
  3.  If your neighbor has bed bugs, make sure to get your apartment checked out too (p.s. This is a new law about adjacent apartments in NY state!)
  4. Keep personal items like purses off of the floor, especially in public areas.
  5. Make a moat to protect your bed! Putting some talcom powder in a plastic bowl can prevent bed bugs from being able to climb onto your bed.
  6. Encase, just in case! Buy clothing and mattress protectors that are certified bed bug proof, to ensure that bed bugs cannot bite through.
